 2023 NBA Draft

A 7-foot-5 superstar heard his name called first overall in the 2023 NBA draft, top-10 picks were traded, and one player unexpectedly fell out of the lottery.

The decisions taken by NBA teams on Thursday will have repercussions as far into the future as free agency and the 2023-24 season.

The San Antonio Spurs took the French sensation Victor Wembanyama with the first overall choice in the draft. The Spurs have high hopes for Wembanyama because he is the most talked about NBA prospect since LeBron James in 2003.

The Charlotte Hornets, who drafted Brandon Miller, and the Portland Trail Blazers, who picked Scoot Henderson, are just two of many clubs hoping their draft choices would provide them with a similar boost. When the Houston Rockets selected Amen at No. 4 and the Detroit Pistons selected Ausar at No. 5, the Thompson brothers made NBA history as the first brothers ever to have both been selected in the top five picks in the same draft.

There were a few deals made in the first round as well, including one involving Bilal Coulibaly and Jarace Walker from the Indiana Pacers and Jared Sullinger and Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards, and another involving Jett Howard and Dereck Lively II from the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks.

Our basketball experts discuss the night's top stories and their implications for the league.

Borzello, Jeff The selection of Bilal Coulibaly at number seven seems premature to me. The fact that Coulibaly beat out players like Jarace Walker, Taylor Hendricks, and Cam Whitmore might not be as surprising as his rapid improvement over the past three months. He was almost unknown at this time last year and was still largely forgotten about earlier in the current season. His draft stock had been climbing steadily over the past few weeks, and his potential was seen as limitless. The Wizards have a lot to gain in the long run from this move.

With Victor Wembanyama Borzello on their team, the San Antonio Spurs will be able to win a championship: Indeed, there is a significant likelihood of this happening. Wembanyama was, at one point in time, the best player in the NBA, and the fact that the Spurs are led by the best player in the league should, in theory, give them a decent chance to win a championship with him at the helm. If he even comes close to live up to expectations, he is going to be a player who elevates a franchise, and eventually, other players all across the league will want to play with him in order to increase their chances of winning a championship.

Bontemps: That's right, because it's not very fun to cheer for a player to fail, especially when they have as much potential as Wenbanyama does. And, provided that Wenbanyama maintains his health, he has a chance to become the third extraordinarily special No. 1 pick in Spurs history, joining the ranks of David Robinson and Tim Duncan, both of whom guided the Spurs franchise to all five of its titles. This is possible if Wenbanyama maintains his fitness.

Givony: That is correct, since I wouldn't put money on Wembanyama's ability to compete with anyone else. In addition, the Spurs' front office has demonstrated that it is aware of the requirements necessary to assemble a team of players capable of winning a championship.

Woo: In the end, this is true. Who else should we bet on if we are not willing to put our money on this individual? Wembanyama is not like the other players in the game in any way, shape, or form, and this makes it hard to predict the past or the future. If he has a lengthy career and is generally healthy throughout it, I believe he will succeed.

Which draft pick, other than the lottery, will have the most significant effect on his team's performance the following year?

Borzello: Because of his maturity, experience, and offensive skill set, Jaime Jaquez Jr. will be a popular selection, but I can't dismiss Nick Smith Jr. sliding to Charlotte at the 27th overall pick in the draft. At the beginning of the season, he was widely considered to be the top NBA prospect among college basketball players, but he battled with both injuries and consistency. Smith was able to secure a position with a solid organization, despite the fact that the late first round is typically comprised of playoff teams searching for more seasoned players. In addition, he won't have to take on the ballhandling and playmaking responsibilities that come with playing next to LaMelo Ball because he will be reunited with an old AAU teammate named Brandon Miller.

Bontemps: Jaquez. The product of UCLA, an older prospect who knows how to play, is joining a Miami Heat roster that has a potential money crunch to keep this team together, as both Gabe Vincent and Max Strus are scheduled to become free agents. This is due to the fact that Max Strus and Gabe Vincent are both set to leave their current contracts. It would appear that Jaquez would be an excellent choice to make an early appearance in Erik Spoelstra's rotation.

Givony: Most of the agents of green room guard prospects had Utah's backcourt position highlighted as one of the most enviable because of the copious playing time that appears to be available for a club that doesn't need to be in any rush to win games. This is because Utah doesn't need to be in any hurry to win games. In the end, Keyonte George emerged victorious over a large number of other applicants to claim this position. He was selected 16th overall, which might pave the road for him to assume a starting role and provide him with abundant offensive opportunity. His scoring instincts, as well as his ability to hit pull-up jumpers and make pocket passes out of the pick-and-roll, provide him a great framework of offensive talent to grow around. This is especially true if he is ready to buy into playing with the type of defensive tenacity that coach Will Hardy demands from his players.

Woo: Kris Murray. He is going to be able to make shots and earn minutes for the Trail Blazers, who don't have a lot of consistent shooting in their frontcourt and are probably looking to plug and play him. He is going to be able to do both of these things. I don't know whether Murray has a Keeganesque campaign (Murray's twin brother, Keegan, was a first-team All-Rookie selection for the Kings in 2022-23) but the stuff he naturally does on the court is quite useful. Keegan was a first-team All-Rookie selection for the Kings in 2022-23. There is no doubt that he can make something of this opportunity.

McMenamin: Brandin Podziemski. Podziemski appears to be the type of player who will fill up the stat sheet under coach Steve Kerr's schemes, considering his size and the fact that he is an outstanding shooter. This is despite the fact that the Warriors have had a mixed record in the draft over the past several years. Additionally, now that Jordan Poole has left the team and Donte DiVincenzo may leave the organization for a higher salary in free agency, there should be touches available for him on the squad for the next season.

Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the Spurs, praised Wembanyama's parents on Thursday night for the way they've brought up their son to be able to deal with the enormous amount of pressure that has been placed on him thus far.

"He's got a great disposition, a good combination of intellectual ability and an emotional intelligence at the same time," Popovich said about the player. "He's got a great attitude." "He is aware of what the buzz is about. Even though he is aware of all the attention he is receiving, he continues to enjoy it and makes the most of it.... Therefore, I believe he is aware that there is a strategy for managing that duty while yet allowing people to feel a degree of proximity to him. Therefore, he does not require a great deal of guidance in that respect.

Popovich has stated that Wembanyama will participate in the summer league for the Spurs, but he is unsure of the role that he will play for the team. On July 3, San Antonio will compete in the California Classic, which will be held in Sacramento. This event will begin four days before the commencement of the Las Vegas league, which will be participated in by all NBA clubs.

"I've only spoken with him on the phone a couple of times, so I got to get a better feel for where his head is at," Popovich said. "As I said before, I've only spoken with him on the phone." "I had a conversation with his people, who had been training him his whole life. They have been interacting with our people, and once we are all gathered together, we will need to make those decisions. But you can count on him to show up at some time.

Wembanyama first made his presence known on the national stage in October, when he participated in two exhibition games in Las Vegas with his Metropolitans 92 team. These games were played against the G League Ignite, and they included both Wembanyama and Ignite guard Scoot Henderson. The first game of the series saw Wembanyama finish with 37 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The second game of the series saw him finish with 36 points and 11 rebounds.

During the course of the regular season in the French LNB Pro A League, Wembanyama led the league in all three statistical categories he competed in by averaging 20.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game. Wembanyama was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the League and guided Metropolitans 92 to the championship game of the French league.

After being selected first overall by the Spurs, 19-year-old Victor Wembanyama shook hands with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Wembanyama was taken by the Spurs. Many people believe that Wembanyama is a once-in-a-generation kind of talent. John Minchillo / Associated Press Photo

After the draft, the general manager of the Spurs, Brian Wright, stated that Wembanyama first appeared on the radar of the team's international scouts when he was 15 years old. Since that time, the Spurs, along with many other teams in the NBA, have been following his development.

"You start hearing of this young player with tremendous talent, tremendous size and so we started to see him, some of us maybe when he was 16, 17," said Wright. "You start hearing of this young player with tremendous talent, tremendous size and so you start hearing about him." "He always played it up, which resulted in the rumors of him spreading, and of course, as we all went to see him, we were able to witness the exceptional talent that he possessed."

"But when you look at how much he's grown and developed as a player over the course of that time period, to the point where he's now leading his team to the championship of the French league, and that's not an easy task, " He did that while carrying that team on his shoulder while competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Therefore, it has been interesting to see his development.

2023 NBA Draft: Winners, losers and biggest surprises

The San Antonio Spurs have now triumphed in the NBA lottery on three separate occasions, each time earning the right to select first overall in the draft. They struck gold with their next two selections, David Robinson in 1987 and Tim Duncan in 1997, both of whom spent their entire NBA careers playing with the Spurs and are widely regarded as being among the very best power forwards of all time.

Now, Wembanyama will begin his NBA career under the tutelage of Popovich, the coach with the most victories in the history of the NBA. Popovich was also the coach under whom Duncan played the entirety of his NBA career.

Popovich stated on Thursday that Wembanyama will be the focus of attention and that he, and no one else, even LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or Tim Duncan, can take the spotlight away from him.

Popovich remarked, "He's Victor, and that's who we want him to be," referring to the player they have on their team.

Wembanyama shared with ESPN's Brian Windhorst on the night of the lottery that he was "trying to win a ring ASAP." After going through the draft, he adjusted his expectations accordingly.

"Some players have spent years attempting to win the championship and win a ring, but they have been unsuccessful." Wembanyama responded by saying, "I don't want to be one of those." "My objective is going to be to get closer and closer to the ring with each and every try, and to figure out how to get there."

First-round surprises, winners, and losers from the 2023 NBA draft are discussed here.

The Spurs have qualified for the postseason a record 22 times in a row under Popovich, which is tied for the longest such streak in NBA history (tying the Syracuse Nationals and Philadelphia 76ers stretch from 1950 to 1971). The streak began in 1998 and will continue through 2019.

However, during the course of the past four seasons, the squad has not been able to finish with a record better than.500, posting records of 32-39, 33-39, 34-48, and 22-60 in the most recent campaign. In the event that the Spurs finished in last place during the 2022–2023 season, they had a 14.0% chance of having the first overall pick.

Wembanyama will be joining a Spurs squad that relied largely on its younger players in the previous campaign. The top five scorers for the Spurs in terms of total points were all 25 years old or younger. This does not include Jeremy Sochan, who was selected as the No. 9 overall player by the Spurs the previous year and averaged 11.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in 56 games played.

Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Malaki Branham, and Sochan are all important members of San Antonio's core, which will help the city advance in the future. The Spurs will also have 28 draft picks available to them over the next six seasons, including 11 first-round selections.

But why is it such a huge deal that Wembanyama will be drafted by the Spurs?

To begin, let's talk about what they had to give up in order to get to this stage. They had to trade Dejounte Murray and Derrick White in order to get here, and as a result, they ended the previous season tied with the Rockets for the second-worst record in the league.

Wembanyama is regarded a once-in-a-generation talent, and Lakers superstar LeBron James referred to him as a "alien." In the end, everything was worth it because of Wembanyama's status.

In the meantime, Jonathan Givony, an analyst on the draft for ESPN, said that Wembanyama had been impressing NBA executives for a long time prior to this year.

"The 18-year-old Wembanyama, who recently measured 7-foot-4 barefoot with an 8-foot wingspan, has wowed NBA executives for the past three years with his exceptional combination of fluidity, perimeter skill, shot-blocking instincts, and feel for the game," Givony wrote. "Barring a major surprise, Wembanyama has firmly established himself as the likely No. 1 pick."

"For the past two years in a row, he was awarded the title of French LNB Pro A Best Young Player, and he made his debut in the EuroLeague last season."

Victor Wembanyama

The draw for the player on Wednesday was obviously going to be the most successful for whichever team was fortunate enough to come away with the French phenomenon.

However, even though Wembanyama stated before the lottery that he would be content no matter where he landed, this did not guarantee that he would be selected as the winner of the prize.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Pacific-12 Conference tied for the most overall draft picks in this year's NBA Draft. This contained six picks in the first round of the draft, including the first and second overall picks, respectively, who were Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball.

Markelle Fultz, a player for the University of WASHINGTON, was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the first overall choice. He joins UCLA's Bill Walton in 1974 and Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) in 1969 as the only other top picks to come from a Conference member. In the history of the University of Washington, Fultz is the first Husky to be selected first overall in the NBA Draft.

As a result of the University of Washington's Kelsey Plum being selected first overall by the San Antonio Stars in the WNBA Draft in April, Washington became the first school and the Pac-12 became the first conference to have both a No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft and a No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft from the same institution. As a result of Abu Danladi's selection at the top of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, the Pac-12 Conference became the first conference in the country to have the top pick in each of these three selections.

It was the first time in league history and just the fourth time in the 71-year history of the NBA Draft that the top two picks came from the same conference. Lonzo Ball, who played for UCLA and was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2017, was selected by his hometown Los Angeles Lakers as the No. 2 pick.

The 2023 NBA Draft has concluded, Victor Wembanyama has been traded to the Spurs, and basketball fans all across the world are pondering whether or not their team's draft choices will alter the future of their club.

Even while just a small number of players in each draft class have the potential to significantly alter the course of the competition, it's still entertaining to guess about who came out on top and who came out on the losing end.

The answers to some of these questions won't be known for a few more months, or at the very least, not until we participate in the Vegas Summer League. The one thing that we can say for certain is that the family of the Thompson twins has probably never had a better night, and that fans of the Wizards are in for a long season in 2023–24.
